Markham Takes Precautionary Measures to Break the Chain of Transmission of COVID-19

MARKHAM, ON — March 13, 2020 — The City of Markham is committed to the health and safety of its employees and the Markham community. We are working closely with our Public Health colleagues at the regional, provincial and national levels concerning the evolving novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation.

The Markham Civic Centre will remain open to the public during regular operating hours; however, residents are encouraged to access the City’s services online at or contact the Contact Centre at 905-477-5530 or

With growing concerns around COVID-19, and out of an abundance of caution, Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Members of Council and the City’s COVID-19 Coordination Team have decided to take the following precautionary measures to help break the chain of transmission of the virus:

All community centres, libraries, Varley Art Gallery of Markham, Flato Markham Theatre and Markham Museum will be closed effective midnight tonight until April 5, 2020

All programs and drop-ins – including March Break camps – will be suspended until April 5, 2020 and refunds will be issued

The following public meetings have been cancelled for March:
        General Committee
        Development Services Committee
        Committee of Adjustment
        Heritage Committee
        Accessibility Committee
        All advisory committees

City-produced events have been cancelled for March and will be rescheduled, as appropriate. Although meetings and events are cancelled, our elected officials and staff are still hard at work, and will continue to provide exceptional services to our community. As decisions about meetings and events in the month of April and beyond are made, they will be communicated to the public accordingly.

We have already taken immediate steps to ensure the health and safety of our residents and employees, and we will continue enhanced cleaning and disinfecting at all our facilities while also sharing prevention information in various languages.
