MARKHAM, ON –  October 11, 2018 – The 2018 Clarkson Cup Champions Markham Thunder are back and ready to defend the CWHL title! Come out on Saturday, October 13 to cheer on the Markham Thunder at their Home Opener.

"They took the hockey world by storm during their first season in Markham, and you can expect to hear and feel more Markham Thunder this upcoming season," says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "The Markham Thunder is a team of powerful, elite athletes and Olympians who electrified our community, inspired us and have made us #MarkhamProud."

To start the 2018-19 season, Markham Thunder will face the Worcester Blades on their home ice at the Thornhill Community Centre arena. The official celebration starts at 7:00 p.m. Be there for the championship banner grand reveal, take a photo with the Clarkson Cup, win in-seat giveaways, and stay to meet the players after the game.

"We are very excited to kick off our second season at home with the goal of defending the cup," says Chelsea Purcell, General Manager, Markham Thunder. "The City of Markham's support has been greater than anything we could have imagined. We are looking to build on the support from the community throughout the season, and hope to see a lot of fans at the game this Saturday!"

They’re here to defend the Cup.

The 2018-2019 Markham Thunder are ready to roll. After a long training camp, new Assistant Coach Cherie Piper says, “We are excited to have our final roster selected. Every athlete gave it their all during the tryout process and we are proud of the women selected to represent the Markham Thunder this season.”

“It was one of the most competitive tryouts we have ever had,” remarks General Manager Chelsea Purcell. “It took us a week longer than expected to get to our final roster, but we are glad we took that extra time as our decisions changed as players stepped up and proved they can play in this league.”

Captain Jocelyne Larocque knows the coaching staff had a difficult time choosing the final roster, and settling on 16 returning players, two free agents, and five rookies chosen at the 2018 CWHL Draft. “Victoria Bach impressed me with her skill, speed and composure. Jess Jones has incredible vision coupled with skill, hard work, and sportsmanship,” says Larocque when asked which players impressed her the most at camp. “We are looking to defend the Clarkson Cup and I am excited to get the season started!”

Head Coach Jim Jackson is glad to finally have a complete picture, “Building a team is like building a puzzle, each piece has to fit and have a role to play. This is how we had to build our team in an ever-changing league that has grown in speed, size, strength and individual and team skill.”

Each of his hand-selected pieces brings their own dynamics and strengths to the team with the foundation of intensity and work ethic worthy of a defending championship team looking to repeat. “We feel as a coaching staff that we have the right leadership in place and supporting cast to compete every time we step on the ice.”

“Thunder fans should be excited for this year,” says Assistant Coach Kevin Stone. “It’s like Christmas morning – we finally get to see what our new roster looks like, and now we get to play.”

The home opening weekend against the Worcester Blades takes place at the Thornhill Community Centre on October 13-14th.
